8 Matches for "gay mayor"
When people stoop to low-blow ignorant propaganda tactics like this, it means their candidate of choice has nothing better to offer. Houston Comptroller Annise Parker did well on election night in the mayors race, earning her a seat in a run off against Gene Locke (polls now have her leading 47-34).

So with a lead like that, the gloves come off, and boy did they. Local wingnut Dave Wilson sent out a postcard to 35,000 people featuring a photo of Parker and her partner, declaring, "Is this the image Houston wants to portray?" and takes the "oh, so sorry you are a homosexual and need to be free from it" tack:

The homophobic attacks against Houston mayoral candidate Annise Parker have begun, and the first is a doozy. It's a postcard mailing to 35,000 people from local activist Dave Wilson featuring a picture of Parker and her longtime partner, which asks,...

A conservative Christian activist in Houston mailed 35,000 fliers to attack openly gay mayoral candidate Annise Parker.

In the past I have often had to “corner” candidates by asking questions about LGBT equality at public events to get them to answer my questions.  A problem with this method, besides taking the effort to end up at these events to ask the questions while being a student & working, is that this format often provides more wiggle room for equivocation and avoiding the question, and it doesn't always capture their response permanently in writing, audio, or video depending on the size and scope of the venue.  In some cases this method has worked well though.

This year however I have asked all 3 candidates (although one has now dropped out) about their stances on LGBT equality in an online format, mostly in live-blog events.  With these events there are a lot of questions left in advance, and a lot of questions hurled at the candidate while they are there.  So they can very easily pick and choose which questions they want to answer without looking like they are really avoiding a given question intentionally.  I am pleased to report that all the candidates have answered my questions on LGBT equality without being cornered.

I was contacted by The Advocate several days ago to see if I was interested in doing a piece for the mag on Chapel Hill's incoming mayor, Mark Kleinschmidt, who is openly gay and won only by a hair (106 votes), in what is one of the most liberal cities in NC.

Well, it certainly wasn't hard to say yes to that scoop. I emailed Mark and we met not far from my office in downtown Durham at a popular restaurant, Toast. I set up my trusty cam, and we ordered lunch for a leisurely conversation about many things -- his election, his family involvement with the race, and the unexpected homophobic (and ill-thought-out tactic) by an opponent. He also had some interesting and thoughtful things to say about the loss of marriage equality in Maine as he and other out candidates around the country celebrated victory on election night.
