U.S. National News The House Oversight & Government Reform Committee approved the Domestic Partnership Benefits & Obligations Act, which would offer the same benefits, including health insurance and pensions, to same-sex partners of federal workers and to opposite-sex spouses. (This news comes via the DC Agenda, the reincarnated Washington Blade.) The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals [...]

IVF, Reproductive Technologies, Catholicism, and Surrogacy in Australia are our updates for today. In fact, just this week, the Catholic Church issued a statement that can be found here regarding couples who are infertile and how the Church views how they proceed in creating a family. I found it to be interesting, but certainly painful for those Catholics who cannot conceive naturally.

The murder of a gay teenager in Baltimore has left a family grieving and a community questioning why he was killed. The suspect is a family friend and ex-con who had served only 10 years of an original 30-year sentence for an earlier crime.

Jason Mattison Jr., 15, was found raped, gagged and stabbed to death in a closet at his aunt's house last week.

International Transgender Day Of RemembranceOn the 20th of November each year, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice with the International Transgender Day Of Remembrance (TDOR).

The Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder on November 28th, 1998 kicked off the "Remembering Our Dead" web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Rita Hester's murder - like most anti-transgender murder cases - has yet to be solved.

Although not every person represented during the Day of Remembrance self-identified as transgender - that is, as a transsexual, crossdresser, or otherwise gender-variant - each was a victim of violence based on bias against transgender people.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is an excerpt from The First Assassin, by John J. Miller.

Saturday, February 23, 1861

When Lorenzo Smith heard the chugging of the train, he felt for the revolver at his side. His fingers met its smooth handle, hidden beneath his black coat. Then he found the short barrel and the trigger below. Smith had reached for it a dozen times in the last hour, but he wanted to be certain that the gun was still there. It will make me a hero, he thought. It will change history.

If Elvis and Christopher Walken had a son, he would look like Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), the dreamy-eyed vampire in Chris Weitz’s film The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The much-anticipated film is a sequel to the hugely popular Twilight, based on the best-selling series of books by Stephenie Meyer, who has found a teeny-bopper formula for repackaging the classic Wagnerian theme of love-death. If the screeches from the audience during the screening I attended are any indication, then this film will, like its predecessor, satisfy the romantic longings of its target audience: twelve-year-old girls. For that group, the endless focus on star-crossed lovers hurts so good; for the rest us, it just hurts.

That Nene Anegasaki, she's a charmer. She's also a video game character from extreme dating sim Love Plus, now wedded to a flesh and blood gamer.

The two were married when a man brought his DS along with a copy of Love Plus to a church in Guam. There's no word on honeymoon plans, but the two will be holding a small reception for family, close friends and the internet on November 22nd. (Seriously, there will be a webcam and stuff.)

It just goes to show, the power of Woman has no bounds. Stick her in a digital fortress, simplify her beauty to Nintendo DS rendering limits and give her a shrill, anime voice. Woman will triumph all the same. [Tiny Cartridge via technabob]

Like the prior model, the new Pogoplug allows for USB drive sharing over the Internet. It'll run for $129, still have no service fees, take up to four USB drives, and have Twitter and Facebook integration.

Aside from automatically syncing content with a Mac or PC, you can share and watch movies, listen to music, or view photos directly through the Pogoplug website and even on an iPhone. Since we looked at the original version, Pogoplug has apparently made some upgrades to add a drag-and-drop interface and sharing over social media sites, such as Twitter and Facebook. But as we mentioned back then, while this is a great interface and solution, you are going to be relying on the company staying in business in order to be able to share data.

Transgender Day of Remembrance
From Mombian
Today 6:06 AM - 5 views
Today marks the 11th International Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. My thoughts are with all of the transgender community today, but especially with transgender parents, transgender and gender variant children, and their parents.
Here are some resources to help spread understanding:

don't know why the Family Research Council continues to keep me on its email list. I received one today about ENDA.

Like so many things put out by the Family Research Council, the email is full of distortions and doublespeak. I want to highlight two of the most egregious:

The father of a 14-year-old boy who went missing two years ago has appealed to the gay community to help find him. Andrew Gosden has not been seen since September 14th, 2007.

In May 2008, Chicago Public Radio teamed up with National Public Radio (NPR) to produce an episode of the show This American Life called “The Giant Pool of Money.” The episode garnered widespread praise and won several awards for explaining the subprime-mortgage crisis with clarity and concision. It was such a success that NPR created a podcast, Planet Money, featuring the same team of reporters and producers. Planet Money covered the financial collapse last fall and continues to file jargon-free reports on the economy three times a week.

A few weeks ago, that crew put together another big project, this time a two-parter of This American Life and several subsequent podcasts devoted to the subject of health care. As in “The Giant Pool of Money,” the reporting was clear and even-handed. The team’s correspondents sought out industry professionals, economists, and patients. (They ignored politicians, by and large.) They surveyed the history of the American health-care system and drew some conclusions about why it has so many problems. And, if you’re someone who expects a certain amount of leftishness from NPR, those conclusions might surprise you.

Denialogues OK New Dollars for Sexual Ignorance

Progressives who were paying attention breathed a sigh of relief and gratitude when President Obama left abstinence-only funding out of the 2010 budget. Finally, we had a more reality-based approach to human sexuality reflected in government policy, or at least, not affront to it. Some people, therefore, hoped that when the Senate Finance Committee okayed Sec. 2954 of the health-reform bill on September 30 it wouldn't survive. But Wednesday, the noxious paragraph was in the final bill that may be voted on this weekend.

SEC. 2954. RESTORATION OF FUNDING FOR ABSTINENCE EDUCATION. Section 510 of the Social Security Act (42 U.S.C. 710) is amended (1) in subsection (a), by striking fiscal year 1998 and each subsequent fiscal year and inserting each of fiscal years 2010 through 2014; and (2) in subsection (d) (A) in the first sentence, by striking 1998 through 2003 and inserting 2010 through 2014; and (B) in the second sentence, by inserting (except that such appropriation shall be made on the date of enactment of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in the case of fiscal year 2010) before the period.

There is a widespread lack of knowledge regarding safer sex and sexual health in the United Kingdom, BBC News reports. Results of a survey of 2,000 people ages 16 to 50 by the U.K. Department of Health and Department for Children, Schools and Families reveal many misconceptions.

Julia Boseman did fabulous, difficult work on the School Violence Protection Act in our state Senate, earning her Equality NC's Legislative Award this past weekend. I'm sorry to hear that she's not running again (she'd most certainly win), but being the only out member of our General Assembly has to be tough with all those good-old-boys in there. Family always comes first. (Q-Notes):

State Sen. Julia Boseman (D-New Hanover), the only openly gay or lesbian member of the General Assembly, announced Thursday she will not seek re-election when her term ends in 2010.
