There is certain things that you likely never find on those infamous star maps you can buy on any street corner in Los Angeles.
Imagine learning that Barney's Beanery used to hang a sign that said "Fagots Stay Out" or v...
Delightful dapper and quite chic, Bar Uriarte occupies a long, narrow space on one of Palermo Viejo's most inviting cobbled lanes. Once inside, you'll discover a warmly lighted, handsomely outfitted restaurant with a long bar on one side and a couple of different dining areas - the one in back is quietest and best-suited to a romantic meal. It's not overstating things to call this one of the top few bar-and-grill venues in the city, and certainly one of the most stylish.

It finally happened last May. For the first time in roughly 10 visits to Laguna Beach, I did not stop at Taco Loco for a plate of blackened mahimahi or Pacific lobster tacos. This in no way reflects a lack adulation for this simple seafood shack along Highway 1, about midway between Laguna's tiny, quasi-gay district and its comely downtown, where the main thoroughfares are shaded by eucalyptus and pepper trees and lined with decidedly snazzy boutiques and cafes (very few of them are chains). Taco Loco is a Laguna institution and de rigueur for fans of the singular Southern California (and Baja) road-side delicacy: the humble fish taco.

Of the dozen or so gay nightspots in Guadalajara's "Centro" historic district, Circus is arguably the most popular, especially on Friday nights, when the bi-level club with its two pulsing dance floors throbs into the late-night hours. Circus has one larger room for dancing, and next to that a smaller one with a couple of quieter side rooms for relaxing. It's just off the main gay-bar drag of Av. Prisciliano Sanchez, steps from several other appealing places for dancing and cruising.
Millions of travelers will take to the skies this season to celebrate the holidays with family and friends. Whether you’re hitting the slopes, visiting relatives or simply getting away with your partner from the hustle and bustle, American A...
Perched overlooking a stunning stretch of beachfront and Pacific Ocean, Laguna's elegant Splashes Restaurant is part of the swanky, gay-friendly Surf and Sun Hotel - it's accessed by taking the elevator to the lower level, and the dining room of tall windows, polished-wood floors, and casually stylish rattan chairs is adjacent to the hotel's breezy pool area. Splashes also has some outdoor dining, sheltered by glass partitions from the crashing surf - this is quite the dramatic setting for lunch
The Coast Inn and Boom Boom Room gay resort and nightclub were synonymous with the Laguna Beach gay scene for decades before the complex closed down in fall 2007 after years of hosting everybody from Rock Hudson to assorted gay porn stars to thousands of GLBT revelers and vacationers. The 1930s-era structure still sits empty along Pacific Coast Highway at Mountain Road - behind it you'll find the most gay-popular stretch of beach in Laguna, along a gorgeous stretch of the Pacific Ocean.
Open until 11 on weekdays and midnight on weekends, the cheerfully decorated Koffee Klatch might as well be considered as one of Laguna Beach's best gay nightlife options - it draws a very mixed GLBT/straight crowd, the staff is fun and helpful, and there's usually a cool crowd in this place. It's also next to the town's gay bar, Bounce, and along a stretch of gay-popular businesses. With all this going for it, it's a great spot to meet and chat with locals, and there are decadent desserts here.
Walk through the lobby of the Waikiki Grand Hotel, a budget-oriented apartment-rental hotel, and you'll find Honolulu's best source for gay-pride items, and GLBT-related sex toys, lube, magazines (adult and otherwise), cards, gifts, and CDs and DVDs. It's also a good bet for swimwear, underwear, and club gear - very handy considering that Queen's Surf Gay Beach is a 10-minute walk away, and the popular Hula's Gay Bar is upstairs from 80% Straight, on the second floor of the hotel.
The trendy restaurant at the gay-friendly Shorebreak Hotel, Mediterranean-inspired Zimzala has quickly earned acclaim as one of coastal Orange County's most intriguing and successful dining options. It's just 15 miles from Laguna Beach and well worth a trip for foodies, or for a post-shopping nibble after shopping in nearby Newport Beach. Talented chef Vince Muraco oversees the kitchen and draws on recipes from nearly two dozen countries in and around the Mediterranean region.

With the closure of the famed Boom Boom Room and Coast Inn, which anchored the Laguna Beach gay scene for many years, this arty, liberal seaside town in Orange County has become a bit lower-profile as a gay vacation spot. Still, the town's one cozy bi-level gay nightclub, Bounce, is an enjoyable spot for mingling, cruising, and - especially on weekends - dancing. Early in the week, just the lower basement space is open, and there's karaoke down here. The main-floor has a decent-size dance floor.
With its progressive embrace of gay and lesbian travelers and high number of GLBT employees, the San Francisco-based Joie de Vivre boutique hotel group is well-known among gay visitors to California, where the company has an impressive portfolio of mid-priced and upscale lodging options. Most of these are in and around San Francisco, but increasingly, Joie de Vivre has begun branching out - in 2009, they opened the sleek Shorebreak Hotel in the laid-back surf town of Huntington Beach.
